{"id":736,"date":"2017-08-03T23:46:04","date_gmt":"2017-08-04T03:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alakanandamukerji.com\/w\/?page_id=736"},"modified":"2017-08-04T19:20:09","modified_gmt":"2017-08-04T23:20:09","slug":"artist-statement-3","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/alakanandamukerji.com\/w\/?page_id=736","title":{"rendered":"Artist Statement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alakanandamukerji.com\/w\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/MG_5578.jpg\"><\/a>I am Alakananda Mukerji, and I grew up on the River Ganges.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I have long since left the narrow streets of Benaras where life is awash in a flood of color and a constant stream of souls.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet however so far I may find myself from those ancient riverbanks, my memory, my art, and indeed my very being &#8212; these are forever caught up in the notion of endless, sacred flow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">People and faces, the surge of sounds, the unfathomably old commingling with the untarnishedly new &#8212; all the rhythms and rhymes of India: this is the wellspring of who I am.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I flow from this source, but I have become the river &#8212; changing, evolving, flowing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And what flows from me, my painting, it is often a conversation between the me that was and the me that is becoming.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Memories, media, materials &#8212; bits of canvas, pieces of the past &#8212; anything I can get hold of: this is my art.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am the medium.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am the flow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The subtle tones of Europe, and the soaring spirit of America: these flow in me too, for in these places I was also educated, alongside rivers with strange-sounding names like the Ali\u00e1kmonas, the Thames, and the Mississippi.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These are part of me now and I am part of them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I am changed, though my wellspring stays the same.
